So many exciting changes to the farm this year! Curtis Farms has always operated in a "homestead" fashion. We are relatively tiny (as far as commercial production goes), and we have many little operations (herbs, vegetables, pork and yarn). Most of the products we sell have always been a bi-product of what our family will use. Often times this means gourmet and unusual products. This year we took on a project that will be years in the making!
After much consideration, Curtis Farms has decided to participate in the Valais Breed up program; making us the premier Valais breeders in New Hampshire. In recent years, the Valais Blacknose, a Swiss heritage sheep breed, has become a global sensation. North American breeders have been racing to breed this sheep since their semen has become available to the United States. The Valias has been described as "the worlds's cutest sheep" and "the world's friendliest sheep". Since there are restrictions on importing live animals, we've tasked ourselves with "breeding- up." For more information on our process, we welcome you to visit our Valais Breed-Up page.
The Scottish Blackface The first step of our Valais Breed up adventure was selecting a breed that would provide the proper foundation, since we can't import either ewes nor rams to the farm, the trick was identifying a breed that could carry carry out specific genetics. As it turns out, the Scottish Blackface was not only a great foundation, we also fell in love with these gorgeous, noble animals.
Gourmet Herbs and Vegetables Herbs will continue to be an important part of our farm and what we provide to the local community. Continue to check the Herbs page for updates and availability.
